first sunday of advent

November 27, 2011

We are now in the ‘now and not yet season’. Waiting is about surrendering to God who is unknown; it is living in hope and expectation.

It is a cold winters day here in bradford. Could be glum, but thats a choice I can make….have decided to be positive even tho the whole landscape looks very glum….

Went into the psychi hospital before 10 am mass; met a few patients who were mildly interested in chaplains work/prayer/blessing .Talked with a 60s lady patient who reminisced about hewr old school and how the nuns had all the 6 year olds lined up outside the church when a coffin was brought in for a funeral; they all had to say a prayer for the dead person. Patient Anna thought girls aged 6 were too young to understand what was going on.

Not very sparky in the hospital today!  Walked to the church only to find that an old aquaintance who has a major mental illness,( he had walked down to church from the same hospital) and who reeks of rot was sitting where I normally park myself ! I looked around the church to look for a somewhere else to kneel, in vain I parked up next to him and then spent the next half an hour trying to shuffle away from him, but he followed me. Then I had to pray for grace ‘to embrace the leper’ …as St Francis and St Therese did so well !

I barely noticed at the end of Mass I was not the least bit bothered by this man’s repulsive smell and annoying habit of placing his hand on my arm to relate some insane bit of news.

Too cold and grim to attempt a bike ride ; also very windy, much prefer learning how to blog and drink whisky and smoke cigars.
